From the coast, you will take a ferry to the Chiquimulilla Canal. Mangrove trees grow in dense numbers along the banks of this canal, their roots forming a complicated network just beneath the surface of the water. Salt water kills most plants, but mangroves thrive in it. These trees make a home for sea and land animals, and a few species in between. Teeming with a whole miniature universe of animals, this is a great place to catch a glimpse of some of the unique ecosystems in Guatemala.

You’ll get an up-close look at some of the native animals on your next stop of the tour. The ferry will bring you to the Monterrico nature reserve, best known for its efforts to preserve sea turtles. While sea turtles are its focus, the preserve also helps protect species of caiman and iguana. Take a moment to look for the birds in the area – this is a good opportunity to spot white-bellied chachalaca, limpkin, and yellow warblers.

After you explore the reserve, you'll head to the nearby volcanic black-sand beach. Just a short distance from Guatemala City and Antigua, the Monterrico beach is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. This tour provides you with some free time for lounging in the sun and exploring the beach.
