Tikal was one of the most important cities to the Maya, and to this day it is the most well-known site in the Maya kingdom. Some parts of the site have been restored to give visitors an idea of what it looked like during its glory days. The nearby Yaxhá site has had less restoration, allowing visitors to experience an authentic ruin in the wilderness.
You’ll be able to get close to the keel-billed toucan, and admire the radiant, psychedelic pattern of colors on its enormous beak. Listen for the noisy, distinctive mating call of the Montezuma oropendola, named after an Aztec emperor. The black-faced antthrush is probably the hardest species to spot – it likes to hunker down under a layer of plant coverage. You may also see the orange-breasted falcon, which is easy to recognize by its brightly-colored belly.
This itinerary will take you through the extremely limited habitat of the ocellated turkey, covering only 50,000 square miles (80,467 square km). These blue-headed turkeys have more colorful plumage than the North American variety, with patches of blue and distinctive, eye-shaped patterns.

Set within the northern reaches of Guatemala’s Petén department is the incredible Mayan site of Tikal. With its massive Mayan temples, steep limestone pyramids and thick green jungles, Tikal is undoubtedly one of the top attractions in Guatemala. The ruins and surrounding forest are located within the Tikal National Park.

The Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo Natural Monument includes the Mayan sites of Yaxhá, Nakum, Topoxté, and El Naranjo. The largest site is Yaxhá, which sits between two lovely lakes. Yaxhá gained widespread fame in 2005 when Survivor Guatemala was filmed here.
