Finca El Pilar and its Hummingbirds

Finca El Pilar and its Hummingbirds

Fincal El Pilar’s gardens hum with the tiny, whirring wings of its resident hummingbirds. This farm does not produce agriculture, but rather exists to help conserve some of the rare and endangered species of plants and animals in Antigua.

Throughout the grounds, there are no less than 900 hummingbird feeders, set up to feed the huge population of hummingbirds here. They hover near the feeders to dip their beaks for a refreshing sip of sugary nectar. Typically hummingbirds are 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 13 cm) long, so a large number of them can gather at a single feeder. While you observe the feeders, you might see several of the 700 species of hummingbirds that live in the area.

On this tour you will hike the well-maintained trail through the forest, designed to protect the surrounding grounds from the ecological impact of visitors. Your guide will provide information on the surrounding flora and fauna.

You’ll stroll past venerable populations of white pine, oak, and cypress trees. Because the farm is fairly high in the mountains – 8,694 feet (2650 m) above sea level – parts of the trail will pass through a high-elevation cloud forest, which is usually shrouded in mist. In addition to protecting an endangered environment, El Pilar also provides water to nearby communities and grows a small amount of coffee.
